1. Salem
Located just 25 km (16 miles) from Boston, Salem is world-famous for its witch trials and enchanting atmosphere.
Its historic centre, especially around Chestnut Street, is filled with charming cafés, restaurants, and independent shops.
Some of the city's must-see attractions include:
- Salem Witch Museum
- New England Pirate Museum
- Peabody Essex Museum, home to an impressive collection of art and cultural artefacts
At Halloween, Salem completely transforms into one of the biggest Halloween destinations in the world. Thousands of visitors come every year to experience its mysterious history and magical atmosphere.
It's honestly the place to be for anyone who loves pop culture and all things spooky.

2. Winchester Mystery House
Price: Around €45 for the complete tour
This is probably my favourite haunted location from both a paranormal and architectural point of view.
According to legend, after the deaths of her husband and daughter, Sarah Winchester visited a medium who told her she was haunted by the spirits of those killed by Winchester rifles. To appease them, she supposedly began building a house that never stopped growing for 38 years, day and night.
The result? Over 160 rooms, 10,000 windows, 47 fireplaces, staircases leading nowhere, and doors that open onto walls or empty space. The maze-like design was supposedly intended to confuse wandering spirits. This house has always fascinated me. Legend even says that if you smell roses while inside, Sarah Winchester herself is nearby. The house is open to visitors, and I highly recommend it.

3. New Orleans, Louisiana
New Orleans feels like it was made for Halloween.
The city's reputation comes from its rich Voodoo heritage, famous figures like Marie Laveau, its iconic above-ground cemeteries, and the Gothic beauty of the French Quarter.
Local legends of ghosts, restless spirits, and supernatural encounters are woven into the city's history, while haunted tours, Halloween events, and parades create an unforgettable atmosphere. It's the perfect combination of history, mystery, and celebration. It's also a little piece of France in the United States and unlike anywhere else you'll ever visit.

4. The Stanley Hotel
Located in Colorado, the Stanley Hotel is best known as the inspiration behind Stephen King's The Shining.
Built in 1909, this historic hotel combines elegance with an eerie atmosphere that attracts both history lovers and paranormal enthusiasts.
Many guests have reported strange experiences, including doors slamming on their own, footsteps echoing through empty corridors, lights switching themselves on, and even ghostly apparitions in certain rooms. The hotel also offers haunted tours and special Halloween events. Of course, it's still a fully operating hotel, so you can even spend the night if you're feeling brave. Would you dare walk its corridors after dark?

5. Waverly hills Sanatorium
Price: Tours start from around €20
Located in Louisville, Kentucky, Waverly Hills Sanatorium is widely considered one of the most haunted places in the United States. Built in 1910 as a tuberculosis hospital, thousands of patients died here, leaving behind a tragic and unsettling history. Since closing in the 1980s, the abandoned building has become famous for its dark corridors, eerie staircases, deserted patient rooms, and countless reports of paranormal activity. Visitors have claimed to see ghostly figures, hear mysterious voices, and experience unexplained presences.
Today, Waverly Hills offers haunted tours and Halloween events that create an unforgettable horror experience.

6. The Appalachian Mountains
Stretching from Canada all the way to Alabama, the Appalachian Mountains are filled with folklore, mystery, and ghost stories. If you've spent any time on social media, you've probably heard people joking that you should never go outside after dark or stare into the forest at night.
Dense forests, mist-covered valleys, and isolated communities create the perfect setting for supernatural legends. The region is home to countless tales involving spirits, strange creatures, and unexplained disappearances, many of which date back to the lives of early settlers, miners, and farmers. Abandoned villages, forgotten mines, and isolated houses are all said to be haunted.
You'll often hear stories about mysterious figures, unexplained sounds, and creatures inspired by local folklore. While internet discussions sometimes mention "skinwalkers," those beings belong to certain Native American traditions from the American Southwest rather than Appalachian folklore, so they're often mixed into modern online ghost stories.
Today, ghost tours and guided paranormal experiences are available throughout parts of Appalachia, especially during Halloween.
Its combination of wild landscapes, local legends, and centuries of history makes the Appalachians one of America's most fascinating spooky destinations.
Just... try to be back before nightfall.

It's a fully immersive experience combining haunted places, fascinating history, local traditions, and unforgettable thrills.
