Sakura in Japan: When and where to see them?
Every spring, Japan transforms into a living postcard. Sakura, or cherry blossoms, are known worldwide, coloring the country in shades of pink and white during a magical yet fleeting period in early spring.
Since Japan is quite elongated, the sakura seasons vary. For example, in the Okinawa islands, they begin very early, from mid-January to early February. We're sharing a map with the provisional blooming dates, courtesy of the Japanese website Tenki (source at the bottom of the article).
🌸 What exactly are sakura?
In Japan, their arrival is celebrated with hanami, a tradition of gathering with friends, family, or colleagues for a picnic under the blossoming trees. They generally bloom for one to two weeks. You can also find many shops selling sakura-flavored pastries and drinks, as well as shops decorated with them.
The cherry blossom season symbolizes both farewells and new beginnings.
When to see cherry blossoms in Japan?
The timing depends on the region, as Japan stretches from the subtropical south to the colder north. Here are the approximate blooming dates (they vary slightly each year depending on the weather) :
