What Is Seichi Junrei?

Seichi Junrei (聖地巡礼) literally translates to "pilgrimage to sacred places." Originally, the term referred to a religious pilgrimage, but in modern Japan it has taken on a whole new meaning.

Today, fans of manga, anime, films, and video games travel to the real-life locations that inspired their favourite stories. Whether it's a quiet street in Tokyo, a picturesque temple, a cosy café, or a beautiful beach, these places become "sacred sites" for fans.

The phenomenon attracts thousands of Japanese visitors and international travellers every year, all hoping to connect more deeply with the worlds they love and experience them in real life. The magic of Seichi Junrei lies in seeing the settings of your favourite stories with your own eyes.

What do fans do during a Seichi Junrei?

A Seichi Junrei is much more than simply visiting a location.

Fans often search for the exact spot featured in an anime, manga, film, or game before taking photos, sketching the scenery, or sharing their experience on social media. Some collect exclusive merchandise linked to the series, while others recreate iconic scenes through cosplay photography or videos.

Many fans carefully plan detailed itineraries, almost like completing a real-life quest, to visit every important location connected to their favourite story. A pilgrimage can last a few hours or several days.

What makes Seichi Junrei so special is the emotional connection it creates. Every location allows fans to walk in the footsteps of their favourite characters and feel a little closer to the fictional worlds they love.

I've also created an interactive map featuring every place I've personally visited in Japan to help you plan your own adventure. Check out MY MAP JAPAN for plenty of great recommendations.

Why It Inspires Us at New Escapade

At New Escapade, Seichi Junrei is a huge source of inspiration.

We're passionate about pop culture ourselves, whether that's Japanese anime, classic films, manga, or legendary myths.

This tradition shows how travel can become something far more immersive than simply visiting beautiful places. Every destination tells a story and creates unforgettable memories.

That's exactly what we hope to recreate for our travellers through personalised travel guides and adventure journals, helping people discover real locations connected to the fictional worlds they love.

Seichi Junrei reminds us that travel isn't only about landscapes. It's about emotion, discovery, and connecting with your passions.

That's the experience we want to share with every traveller.

More than just a pilgrimage : It perfectly combines Japanese culture, pop culture, and immersive travel, showing how real places can become meaningful destinations for fans, where every step tells a story and every photograph captures a memory.

For us at New Escapade, it continues to inspire the way we create personalised travel experiences filled with adventure, emotion, and unforgettable moments.
