Where to stay in Seoul for your first trip ?

28/04/2026

The best neighborhoods based on your budget, the must-see spots, and everything you need to know about transportation.

Seoul is one of the most fascinating cities in Asia: a megacity of 10 million inhabitants where ultra-modern skyscrapers stand alongside palaces from the Joseon dynasty, trendy alleys, and lively markets. The big question is: which neighborhood should you stay in? The great thing is that Seoul is extremely well connected by public transportation, giving you plenty of options.

I've also put everything on a map right here.

Myeongdong : the central hub

Myeongdong is a bit like the Times Square of Seoul: loud, lit up 24/7, and absolutely exciting for a first stay. This is where you'll find most K-beauty stores, street food, and major hotels. It's not the most authentic neighborhood it's quite touristy but it definitely makes you feel like you're in the heart of the city. Very central, lively, and quite noisy at night.

Average budget: 50,000 to 150,000 KRW / night (~€35–110)

NEARBY ATTRACTIONS

→ Gyeongbokgung Palace (20 min by metro)

→ Namsan Tower & park (20 min walk)

→ Myeongdong Night Market

Hongdae : the best value for money

A student district around Hongik University, Hongdae is the neighborhood of artists, designers, and party lovers. The streets are covered in street art, filled with trendy Instagrammable cafés, and buzzing clubs. It's also one of the most affordable areas to stay, with many hostels and guesthouses.

Bonus: the AREX line takes you directly to Incheon Airport in 40 minutes.

Average budget: 25,000 to 80,000 KRW / night (~€18–58)

NEARBY ATTRACTIONS

If you're in Seoul for its history, palaces, and traditional charm, this is where you should stay. Insadong is the place to be for fans of antiques, ceramics, and tea shops, along with unique cafés. Bukchon Hanok Village, with its traditional wooden houses, is just a few minutes' walk away.

Gangnam : the most glamorous

Made famous worldwide by Gangnam Style, Gangnam is the district of business, luxury, and the K-pop industry. Wide streets, chic boutiques, and more upscale hotels define this area. It's the perfect choice if you're looking for high-end accommodation.

Itaewon is Seoul's most international neighborhood, partly due to the presence of the U.S. military. Today, it's packed with restaurants from all over the world, trendy bars, and vintage shops. The sub-districts of Haebangchon and Gyeongridan-gil are especially lively.

Less well-known than the classic areas, this neighborhood between Hongdae and the Han River is a favorite among expats. Hapjeong is a paradise for trendy cafés, independent art galleries, and thrift shops. Less touristy, more authentic and the prices reflect that. If you want to experience Seoul rather than just visit it, this is the place.
